FitTeen food school: Pineapple

Pineapple is an extravagant and exotic fruit best known for its ability to treat digestion problems and inflammation.

One cup of pineapple has 82 calories and 131% of your daily vitamin C needs! It also has high levels of potassium which can help lower/balance blood pressure.

Due to the high fiber and water content, pineapple helps to prevent constipation and promote a healthy digestive tract. Bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapples, can reduce swelling and bruising associated with inflammation injury.

Whole pineapples should be stored at room temperature, while cut pineapple should be stored in the refrigerator. Select a pineapple with a firm, plump body. The leaves should be green and easy to pull off.

Antioxidants such as beta-carotene and minerals like copper, zinc and folate can also be obtained through the consumption of pineapple. Listed below are some creative ideas to eat more of this tropical fruit.

Blend your own pineapple juice

My mother has always told me to eat pineapple when I have a sore throat to help heal the inflammation and close friends say pineapple on pizza is the best thing since sliced bread. What do you think? Is pineapple that useful?

Love, FitTeen Maddy
