BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It’s a measure of body fat based on your weight in relation to your height.

BMI is used a tool to indicate whether a person is underweight, overweight, obese or at a healthy weight for their height.¬†If a person’s BMI is out of the healthy range, their health risks may increase. With the rise of childhood obesity, a BMI calculator is a vital tool to keeping track of your weight. Staying in the “healthy weight” range has positive upsides including,

  • Increased energy and ability to join in more activities.
  • Reduced burden on the heart and circulatory system.
  • Improved sleep patterns.
  • Reduced risk for heart disease and certain cancers.

There are a couple ways you can find out where your BMI is. First, you could do it the simple way and use an online BMI calculator. You simply enter your height and weight and allow the calculator to determine your results.

Or, you could do the math yourself. Multiply your weight in pounds by 703. Divide that by your height in inches, squared. (Weight (lbs.) * 703) / Height (inches)2)

For an example, my BMI is 18.7 which is in the healthy weight range. I weight 123 pounds and 5’8 inch tall. Various calculators may give you different answers especially if they factor in gender and age.
